Blaze blanked in Sheffield

Genting Casino Coventry Blaze saw their six-game winning streak in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League come to an end after a 2-0 defeat at Sheffield Steelers.

Blaze, again missing former Steelers captain Steven Goertzen and Vladimir Nikiforov, fell behind after just 25 seconds through Cullen Eddy. Steelers_logo_11

Ben O’Connor doubled Steelers’ lead at 34.06 with goaltender Josh Unice making 24 saves for a shut-out as Blaze were blanked for only the fourth time this season.

Blaze will now look to return to winning ways when Hull Stingrays visit the Skydome tomorrow night (5.15pm face-off).

Coach Chuck Weber said: “It was disappointing, we conceded a goal in the first shift and for the first 40 minutes we were not focused, we were chasing the game.

“The first goal came from a breakdown and we were not playing the system correctly. We gave it a decent push in the third period and had couple of chances on the five-on-three but did not finish them.

“We did not play to our identity and we were going to have a stinker eventually. I can handle losing if we played good hockey and the other team played better but I didn’t feel that was the case.

“If this is our only stinker in this last run then I can live with that. We have a chance to bounce back tomorrow and it will say a lot about the team in how they respond and handle adversity. We will need to be ready.”
