Coach Chuck Weber hopes Genting Casino Coventry Blaze can put more daylight between themselves and the bottom two in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League this weekend.
A run of three successive wins have lifted Blaze to eighth place with 31 points, two and eight ahead of Edinburgh Capitals and Dundee Stars in ninth and 10th respectively.
Blaze face those two sides next, with a trip to Murrayfield tomorrow night being
followed by a visit to Dundee on Sunday, bidding to strengthen their top-eight claims.
Weber said: “Edinburgh was my first game, I had just got off the plane and had the long bus ride up there. I remember losing three or four players after the first period, finishing the game short-handed, losing 3-2 and thinking ‘welcome to the team!’
“It will also be my first time to Dundee but we have seen them at home and know the style they play. We have been working on some things this week which we will need to execute. Anyone can beat anyone as you see every week but any time you can put teams in the rear-view mirror you need to take advantage of that.
“There are still things to work on and as a coach you are always striving for perfection. The good thing is we are not repeating mistakes, we are making new ones but we are learning from them. The thing I love about this group is the guys want to get better and learn.”
With the exception of defenceman Steven Chalmers, Weber will have every other member of the roster available this weekend, which means tough decisions will have to be made.
He added: “There are a couple of guys who are a little behind with their conditioning but physically they are OK so I will have to decide which two imports to sit.
“If a player’s game falls off then they will be watching but sometimes a player could be playing well and I decide to rotate depending on the situation. It’s about finding a balance.
“You want to avoid complacency and falling into bad habits and this will keep guys on their toes and keep them honest.”
