Blackwood, Devils blank Flyers

PHILADELPHIA – The Flyers came out Thursday night looking to extend their recent success.

Instead, they laid an egg in a 5-0 loss to the visiting New Jersey Devils.

Mackenzie Blackwood #29 of the New Jersey Devils makes a stick save.

Mackenzie Blackwood made 46 saves in the shutout.

“I think the team did a great job of limiting rebounds and boxing out and taking care of the secondary stuff,” Blackwood said. “I felt really good.”

Miles Wood scored the final two goals of the game in the third period.

“At the end of the day, everything that could go wrong, did,” Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault said.

Blake Coleman opened the scoring for an early 1-0 lead.

“That can take the wind out of the sails, scoring on the first shot,” Coleman said. “Anytime you can put a team on its heels early, it’s going to create that confidence and put a little doubt in their minds.”

Pavel Zacha and Damon Severson also scored for the Devils.

“We knew they were going to press, got a lot of shots on net, but another point of emphasis lately has been our defensive game, and I thought guys defended well, defended hard, and we capitalized on our chances,” Devils coach Alai Nasreddine said. “It was something we talked about after the Montreal game and going into the third period. I thought it was pretty good response.”

Blackwood picked up an assist on the Severson goal

“You can go into a game and not give up any power-play goals, but sometimes you give teams momentum, and tonight was the other way around,” Nasreddine said. “Thought we gained a lot of momentum with our penalty kill, we got their fans on top of their team, and [Pavel Zacha’s shorthanded goal] was a big one.”

Brian Elliott got the start for the Flyers and made nine saves in the loss.

“We were rolling there for a bit, and when you lay a stinker like this, it doesn’t happen often. We need to lean on our veterans and come out kicking next time,” Shayne Gostisbehere, said.

Alex Lyon took the crease early in the third when the score was 4-0; faced one shot and did not make the save.
