In New York, Mackenzie Blackwood made 47 saves to hold off the New York Rangers in a 4-3 win for the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.
“It was a gutsy effort,” Blackwood said. “We’ve got to find a way to close out tight games on the road, and I think we’re all pretty proud of the way we did it tonight.”
Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad and Filip Chytil were the Rangers strikers who pushed for the tying goal in the third but could not find a hole.
“We had plenty of chances,” New York head coach David Quinn said. “We just have to go to work tomorrow and keep getting better in understanding what we need to do and how we need to play to have success consistently. That was the thing, we weren’t consistent enough in the things that we need to do to win.”
Jack Hughes had two goals for the Devils.
“I don’t really like to reflect on stats that much because when they’re bad sometimes they’re out of your control and when they’re good sometimes you’re getting bounces you wouldn’t otherwise,” Blackwood said. “It’s all about how I feel. Right now, I feel pretty good.”
Miles Wood and Travis Zajac had single markers for New Jersey.
Alexandar Georgiev got the start and yielded four goals on 20 shots before getting the hook in the second intermission.
Igor Shesterkin made eight saves in mop up duties in the third period.
