Blackhawks stifle Flames, 5-1 Chicago win fourth of six

In Calgary, the Chicago Blacks’ Jaxson Stauber made 34 saves  in a 5-1 win over the Flames on Thursday night.

It was Stauber’s second NHL start.

“Awesome. He was calm, cool, collected,” Chicago forward Colin Blackwell said. “He’s been like that ever since he got called up. You can tell he’s just locked in all the time. His routine from right when he gets on the bus, he’s pretty dialed in. He made some huge saves. Some were point-blank. He’s been great.”

The Blackhawks moved to 15-28-4 on the strength of their fourth win in six games.

Jason Dickinson had a goal for the Hawks.

“We were all cohesive,” Dickinson said. “We were all on the same page and working together. That’s when we’re at our best. If we can get all four lines and all six [defensemen] and the goalie playing composed and playing together, we’re going to be a pretty good team.”

Jonathan Huberdeau was the lone striker for the Flames, his first period goal tied the game, 1-1.

“They come in here and we know that it’s not the best in the League, they’re the bottom of the standings and we can’t disrespect that,” Huberdeau said. “That’s a lesson.”

Taylor Raddysh had staked Chicago to the early 1-0 lead.

Calgary dropped to 27-13-9

Chicago took the lead in the middle frame on a strike by Boris Katchouk , 2-1.

“It was just kind of like, ‘No way,'” Chicago’s Luke Philp said. “I just kind of saw ‘Bo’ in the high slot there. I wasn’t even thinking this could materialize into a goal, and it did. I was pretty pumped up. I was pretty excited.”

Philp assisted o the goal for his first NHL point.

Dickinson and Sam Lafferty also scored in the second period for a 4-1 lead headed to the third period.

“Obviously, it’s unacceptable,” Huberdeau said. “At home, and we need these points right now. The way we came out and the way we played, too many odd-man rushes. They had so many chances. I feel for ‘Marky’ because he’s been playing good lately and we’re not playing good in front of him.”

Connor Murphy hit an empty-net goal with 43 seconds left for the 5-1 win.

Jacob Markstrom made 24 saves in the Calgary loss.

“It’s not acceptable,” Flames forward Mikael Backlund said. “‘Marky’ is playing really well as of late. We haven’t played good enough in front of him and we all want to be a lot better next time he’s in net.”
