In Chicago, it seems to blow hot and cold for the Blackhawks. On Monday night it was bitter cold and the roster and staff should be thankful there are a few days where no moves can be made during the holidays in the NHL.
On Monday, the Hawks hosted the beleaguered New Jersey Devils, and promptly lost, 7-1.
The Devils’P.K. Subban snapped a 23-game goal skid in the win.
“Obviously it ended up being the game-winner, and I want meaningful points too,” Subban said. “I guess you could say that goal is more special because it helped us for the win.”
Yeah, game-winning goals count in six-goal routs.
Mackenzie Blackwood made 32 saves in the win.
“Our goalie was huge as well, along with the penalty kill, and the game turned as we went on,” Damon Severson (one goal) said of Blackwood and the Devils penalty kill, which went 7-for-7. “That was a huge win right before the break.”
Zack Smith scored the lone Blackhawks goal.
“Just an embarrassment,” Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews said. “I don’t know if that’s an emotion, but that’s what we’re all feeling and what we should be feeling at this moment.”
John Hayden, Jack Hughes, Blake Coleman, Pavel Zacha, and Travis Zajac all scored for the Devils.
“We wanted to have 40 shots this game, we had [44],” Subban said. “We had everybody involved, and that’s what we want. Everybody’s confident now, and that’s great going into the break. We want that to continue coming out of it.”

Corey Crawford got the start for Chicago but made 16 saves before getting the hook in the middle frame.
“Yeah, it’s a missed opportunity,” Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said. “We should be embarrassed. If we’re going to make progress, you’ve got to give yourself a chance to make progress. I don’t think we did that tonight.”
Robin Lehner made 21 saves in the mop up.
