Blackhawks rally for OT win

In Columbus, the Chicago Blackhawks scored twice in the third period to get their game with the Blue Jackets even at 2-2 on Sunday night.

Robin Lehner made 31 saves to get the win for Chicago.

“Columbus played really well today. They came at us hard,” Lehner said. “That we could battle through the second period and keep it 2-0 was big for us. Same message at the intermission, just stick with it.

“It doesn’t matter how long it takes. We got one goal, [Gustafsson] steps up and gets a huge goal for us and we got life back. It was really nice to get this one.”

Riley Nash  and Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for Columbus in the first period.

“I didn’t like our first period at all, but I thought we found a way to respond in the second,” Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton said. “It’s not like we dominated the second, but we played much better, had our chances and were able to stay in the game and give ourselves a chance to come back. In the third, we were really good.”

The loss in extra time extended the Blue Jackets’ point streak to 10 games, 6-0-4.

Dylan Strome and Erik Gustafsson rallied the Hawks with third period goals.

“Good things happen when he gets pucks through and to the net,” Strome said. “[The defense] has actually been getting pucks through, but we haven’t had guys there.”

Patrick Kane was credited with the deciding goal in the shootout.

Joonas Korpisalo got the start fore the Blue Jackets but needed to be helped off the ice in the shootout with an injury. He was injured on the first attempt by the Blackhawks.

“He’s been a rock for us for a while,” Columbus captain Nick Foligno said. “Hopefully it’s not too serious. He’s a guy that, man, we would have liked to have gotten that win for him tonight, because he played outstanding again.”

Elvis Merzlikins finished the shootout for the Jackets.

Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella was livid after the game. He was upset by time running off the clock, 1.1 seconds, after a whistle late in the OT and that time not being put back on the clock. A Columbus goal was waved off as time expired in the extra session leading to the shootout where Korpisalo was injured.
