In Newark, Jack Hughes scored two goals for the New Jersey Devils on Friday.
The second came in extra time to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-3.
The Hawks had rallied late with two goals to get even and force the extra session.
Jonathan Bernier made 24 saves in the win.
Alex DeBrincat, Kirby Dach and Dominik Kubalik were the Chicago strikers.
Dougie Hamilton and Andreas Johnsson also scored for New Jersey in their season opener.
Dach and Kubalik scored with the extra attacker with the goalie pulled. The Blackhawks were on a power play when Dach scored to cut the deficit to 2-3.
Kevin Lankinen made 25 saves in the loss.
