Blackhawks gain split with OT win

In Chicago, it didn’t take long for the Blackhawks to finish their extra session with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night.

Alex DeBrincat scored with just 35 seconds gone in the extra frame to send the Hawks to a 3-2 win.

“[Patrick Kane] was able to get it through, it bounced off my stick and I obviously wanted to put it toward the net,” DeBrincat said. “It worked out this time, but pretty lucky.”

Kevin Lankinen made 29 saves in the win.

“Big win for us, obviously, to respond and get two points,” Chicago head coach Jeremy Colliton said. “It was a battle. I liked our first period, thought we deserved better from the chances we created, a couple of really good power plays (0-for-2). As the game went on it tightened up, they had the lead and did a good job of making it hard for us to generate things. Missed opportunities, but I like how we stayed in it. We were one shot away and we continued to be one shot away until we got our chance.”

Patrick Laine and Cam Atkinson  scored for the Blue Jackets.

“We got away from our style a little bit and they capitalized on those opportunities,” Atkinson said. “It’s nice that we got a point, but I think we should have come away with two.”The Blackhawks, whose only lead of the game was on the OT winner, got a goal from Nicolas Beaudin to tie the game at 1-1.

Carl Soderberg scored for Chicago to tie the game at 2-2.

“It was probably right place, right time thing,” Soderberg said. “Just tried to shoot at the end and hit it pretty good.”

Joonas Korpisalo made 28 saves in the loss.

“We probably played one of our best periods in the third period,” Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella said. “We gave them one chance and they scored a goal. … In the third period, I thought the checking part of our game, being above the puck, sticks on puck, all sorts of things defensively, I thought we played really well.”
