Odenton, MD: On Friday, the visiting Maine Nordiques defeated the Maryland Black Bears in NAHL action at Pine Orchard Arena. It took 60 minutes of regulation hockey, five minutes of 3 on 3 hockey, and six rounds of a shootout to determine the winner. The final score would end up 4-3.
Maine would get on the board first with just 2:44 gone, on a power play goal from Zion Green. Jonny Meiers and Nicholas Bernardo would get the assists. Just twelve seconds later, it was Brendan Gibbons scoring, with helpers from Jack Parker and Jack Kurrie giving Maine a quick two goal lead. Maryland would get back in it in the first with12:09 gone, on a power play goal scored by Laker Aldridge. Elliott Lareau and Ryan Bottrill would get the assists.
Jacob Brockman would score the only goal of the second period, as the Black Bears would tie the game. Assists on the goal were from Sean Kilcullen and Conor Cole at 10:40.
With 6:52 gone in the third period, the Black Bears would take the lead on a power play goal. Kevin Scott would get the goal with help from Kilcullen and Brad McNeil. Jonny Meiers would score with just 1:13 remaining to send the game into overtime. Matthew Conner and Evan Orloff would get the assists.
In overtime, Maryland only got one shot on goal, while Maine took 3 shots. The Nordiques played the final 1:27 a man up after a Black Bears penalty.
Both shooters would score in the first and second rounds, while missing in the third and fourth. In the fifth round both would score, but it would be Tristan Fasig of Maine scoring, while the Black Bears were unable to have the shootout continue. Michael Morelli was in goal for Maryland, making 29 saves on 32 shots. Avery Sturtz would make 32 saves on 35 shots for Maine.
The two teams would play again Saturday night, with the Black Bears winning 3-2 in another shootout.
