Bison tame Steeldogs, 6-3

BASINGSTOKE: The Bison wiped out the memory of a heartbreaking home loss against the Peterborough Phantoms, as they won for the first time in three attempts against the Sheffield Steeldogs.

The 6-3 victory extended the Herd’s lead at the top of the EPL to four points and also saw Slovak netminder Tomas Hiadlovsky make a winning return from injury and he also picked up his first point of the season.

The Herd produced one of their best ever periods of ice hockey on the road in the EPL as they equalled the club record for a first period win of 5-0,200px-LogoBasingstokeBison

The Bison struck first on the powerplay from Rene Jarolin and then Joe Greener doubled the advantage.

Just 28 seconds later the lead was extended to 3-0 as Shaun Thompson continued his good scoring record in recent games.

Jarolin added goal number four from a pass from netminder Hiadlovsky as the two former Edinburgh players combined.

The Bison second powerplay of the evening saw Miroslav Vantroba score to make it 5-0 in a period where they out shot the home side 18-12.

The second session saw the Steeldogs show their bite as they scored three times all the powerplay and two in a five minute major after Vantroba was dismissed for butt ending.

Stanislav Lascek scored the first and then Arnoldas Bosas grabbed a brace.

The session also saw a missed penalty shot from Greener, after he was slashed on a breakaway by Bosas.

The final period saw the Bison make sure of the win as Matt Towalski scored the only goal of the 20 minutes.

The previous night, the Bison got off to a dream start against the Peterborough Phantoms as Stuart Mogg scored after 29 seconds.

The Phantoms equalised in the second period as Jon Baston produced a great save to deny Lloyd Gibson. Darius Pliskauskas slotted home the rebound on the back hand.

The Herd re-took the lead thanks to a powerplay strike from Aaron Connolly, but Will Weldon tied things up by the second hooter.

It was left to defenceman Tom Norton to score the winner five minutes from time.

“I did not think we played badly against Peterborough, but we were just unable to get the job done. It was good to see us bounce back on Sunday with the win,” said Bison head coach Doug Sheppard.

This weekend the Bison are in action three times starting with a home game against the Swindon Wildcats on Friday, followed by road games at Guildford and Swindon on Saturday and Sunday.
