BASINGSTOKE UK: The Bison soared five points clear at the top of the EPL after a quick double over their nearest title rivals the Peterborough Phantoms.
The weekend proved to be a great one for Bison cageman Jon Baston as he recorded back-to-back shut-out for the second time this season.
The Bison won both games 3-0 on home ice first time around as Finnish-born Baston made 25 saves. The following night in Peterborough, Baston added another 40 saves to complete the perfect weekend.
His latest double blank took the goalie’s tally to five for the campaign from this is just from 10 starts for Basingstoke, having joined in the middle of the season as injury cover for Slovak Tomas Hiadlovsky.
The Slovak had recorded one shut-out before he was side lined and with Baston adding five more between them they have set a new club record for a season and there is still three months left of it.
The first win of the weekend saw Canadian Joe Rand who is inspired form since returning to the line-up for the injured Tomas Karpov grabbed a brace of goals and Ryan Watt netted the other.
In the return game 24 hours later, captain Aaron Connolly and Joe Greener scored two goals in the first period and Connolly completed the scoring with an empty netter.
“Jon Baston produced a some real goal tending this weekend and deserved both his man of the match awards. It is also shows we are playing great team defence, ” said Bison head coach Doug Sheppard.
This weekend, the Bison start with a visit from the Manchester Phoenix who currently trial the Herd in this year’s series 4-0.
The Herd then travel north to the face the Hull Pirates and when they were last in Humberside they lost to side at the time who were bottom of the league.
Last Sunday, the Pirates moved off the bottom of the pile and the Bison will be determined this weekend to keep their current winning streak going which currently stands at six games.
