Bison enter big weekend with Cup Final

BASINGSTOKE UK: The Bison face their biggest weekend of the season so far, with the first leg of a cup final and then a top of the table league clash.

Friday night, the Herd to face local rivals the Swindon Wildcats in the first leg of the Autumn Cup, but with the south of England under a blanket of snow, it remains to be seen if the game goes ahead as scheduled.

Then on Sunday evening, the top of the table Bison are off to second placed Peterborough, a game which will go a long way to deciding who wins the South One crown.

Basingstoke currently head their rivals by two points with three games remaining for both sides.

The Bison will be minus British forward Grant Rounding for both games, after he suffered concussion in the last Sunday’s local derby win over Bracknell, which saw the offending Frankie Bakrlik dismissed on a match penalty.

On the up side British defenceman Dan Scott is back on the blue line.

“We started playing play-off hockey last weekend and this will be the same again this weekend. Every game is big at the moment and it is nice we are in the hunt for silverware,” said Bison head coach Doug Sheppard.

Bison captain Aaron Connolly has already lifted a trophy this year, after winning the Basingstoke Gazette Sports Personality of Year award for 2017 at a special awards ceremony last Friday.

This is voted by the readers of the newspaper and Connolly came out on top.

“I was a shock to win this award, but I am delighted. This is personnel award and ice hockey is a team game so I hope the team can now lift some trophies,” said Connolly.
