Bison come into this weekend’s action after a split decision last week

BASINGSTOKE UK: Bison netminder Dan Weller-Evans was given his first start of the season and did not disappoint as he helped the Herd to a 6-2 success over the visiting Telford Tigers in the Autumn Cup.

The goaltender picked up the man of the match beers at the end of the game after making 34 saves.

He certainly had the upper hands on the Tigers’ Canadian duo of Jason Silverthorn and Doug Clarkson.

Silverthorn ended the evening with a rare blank, while Clarkson netted twice, both thanks to superb wrist shots.

However, it was not enough to earn a win as defencman Jay King scored his first ever goals in a Bison uniform with a brace as did Alex Sampsford.

This was after Russ Cowley and Michal Klejna scored the opening two goals of the contest.

On Sunday, in a double header of action between the teams, Weller-Evans again picked up the man of the match award, but this time they were unable to tame the Tigers, as Clarkson on his home debut back with Telford scored the game winner.

The Herd looked to be heading for a Autumn Cup double as led 3-1 after Richard Bordowksi, Hallam Wilson and Sampford.

Clarkson having given his side the lead. The game was turned on it head as Bison’s Klejna was dismissed for spearing.

Andrew McKinney netted on the powerplay and then Jonathan Weaver and Clarkson helped the home side to a 4-3 win.

“I was pleased with the home win and I felt we looked good a 3-1 in the second game, but the match penalty swung the momentum back to Telford and we were unable to hang on,” said Bison player/coach Ashley Tait.

This weekend, the reigning league champions from Basingstoke, will look to maintain their perfect start to the defence of their crown, when they face the Peterborough Phantoms at home and then travel to the Raiders.

Defenceman Chris Cooke who missed the Telford double header, is still a doubt for this weekend.
