Big start for Devils dooms Comets in 5-1 loss

Binghamton, N.Y. – The Comets surrendered four goals in the opening frame as they fell 5-1 to the Binghamton Devils Saturday night at the Floyd L. Maines Veteran’s Memorial Arena. Lukas Jasek scored the lone goal for the Comets. Ivan Kulbakov took the loss in net, stopping 8 of 11 shots before being replaced by Connor LaCouvee.

Nick Lappin put Binghamton up 1-0 just 1:17 into the game. Marian Studenic made it 2-0 five minutes later. Curtis Gabriel continued the push a minute and a half later, tipping a shot past Kulbakov. LaCouvee replaced Kulbakov in net after the goal. The onslaught continued as John Ramage’s shot leaked through LaCouvee a minute later. Jasek got the Comets on the board with three minutes remaining in the first, pushing a rebound past Devils goalie Mackenzie Blackwood. Tanner MacMaster and Michael Carcone tallied the assists.

Ryan Schmelzer capitalized on a turnover to put Binghamton back up by four at the 4:11 mark of the second period. The Comets were unable to find the net in the middle frame despite outshooting Binghamton 12-4.

The Comets fought hard in the third to attempt a comeback but were shutdown by Blackwood and the Devils’ defense.
