LAFAYETTE, La. – Zac Frischmon scored a pair of goals including one of three goals in the second period as the Mississippi RiverKings (23-13-7) fell 5-1 to the Louisiana IceGators (21-19-4) on Wednesday night in Louisiana.
The RiverKings wasted no time finding the back of the net early. Matt Harrington wristed a shot past Adam Courchaine on the power play to put the RiverKings on top 1-0 just 43 seconds into the first.
But Louisiana battled back. John Daniels tied the game at one 9:21 into the first on a wrist shot from the high slot that beat goaltender Garrett Sheehan blocker side. Louisiana chased Sheehan and took the lead at the 16:04 mark on Zac Frischmon’s shot on the power play that slipped between the leg pads of Sheehan to give the IceGators a 2-1. Sheehan was replaced by Spencer McLay.
In the second, Louisiana tallied a trio of goals. Frischmon notched his second of the night when he redirected a pass from Blake Hietala past McLay to give the IceGators a two-goal lead 6:38 into the second. Louisiana added to their lead late. Jeremy Boyer picked up a rebound in the low slot and slid it around the pad of McLay to put Louisiana up 4-1. Geordie Wudrick completed the second-period scoring on a shot from the left circle that found the back of the net with just under four minutes left in the second and Louisiana took a 5-1 lead into the third period and held on to hand the RiverKings their first road loss since February 14.
Garrett Sheehan (9-9-5) took the loss after giving up two goals on five shots in the first 16:01 of play. Spencer McLay stopped 11 of 14 in relief. Adam Courchaine (13-10-3) picked up the win after stopping 31 of 32 shots against.
The RiverKings went 1-6 on the power play, while Louisiana scored twice on four power play opportunities.
