Big second period leads to Walleye win over Elmira

 TOLEDO, Ohio – A.J. Jenks and Joel Chouinard each had a pair of points to lead the Walleye to a 4-1 win over Elmira Sunday at the Huntington Center. Toledo has an overall record of 18-10-1-3 and 7-4-0-1 at home.

Toledo struck early with a power play goal at 6:07 of the first period from the stick of defenseman Joel Chouinard (5th). A.J. Jenks and Shane Berschbach set up the goal that gave the Walleye a 1-0 lead after the first period.

Toledo exploded in the second frame scoring three times. The first came at 5:41 when Tyler Sikura (7th) turned an Elmira turnover into a wrist shot goal for a 2-0 Toledo lead. A wrist shot from the blue line from A.J. Jenks (9th) at 10:18 continued the onslaught. Just 23 seconds later Dane Walters collected his first goal of the season with a deflection of Joel Chouinard’s shot from the blue line and Toledo was up 4-0.

Toledo held shot advantages of 13-4 in the first period, 13-7 in the second period and 11-9 in the third period for a game total of 37-20. The fourth Toledo prompted a goaltending change from Elmira as Nicklas Lundstrom with 22 saves in 26 Walleye shots.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Jeff Lerg stopped 19 of 20 shots and has a record of 13-4-0-2 on the season. The win snapped a three game losing for the Walleye. Toledo finished the game 1-2 on the power play.
