COLUMBUS, GA – The Cottonmouths failed to take advantage of their power play opportunities and the Peoria Rivermen shook off a number of penalties to win, 6-3.
Peoria surpassed its usual scoring average of 3.5 goals per contest, getting an offensive boost from their blueliners who contributed two goals during the game. With 50 shots on target during the contest, the Rivermen exceeded the 26.6 shots they average per game this year. Peoria found itself short handed often, totaling 24 penalty minutes and allowing 9 power plays.
The Rivermen were helped by Steve Morra, who grabbed one goal and one assist. Morra scored short handed 9:57 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Peoria. Peoria was on a disadvantage when Dan Bremner went off the ice for tripping. David Jacobson picked up the assist. Peoria additionally got points from Brandon Greenside, who also racked up one goal and one assist, Matt Summers, who also registered one goal and one assist, Connor P. Toomey, who also tallied one goal and one assist, Ben Oskroba, who also had one goal and one assist, and Walker Wintoneak, who also racked up one goal and one assist. In addition, Peoria received assists from Dave Pszenyczny, who had two.
Columbus put 32 shots on net during the contest, more than the 26.9 it averages per game. The Cottonmouths could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 22 minutes in penalties during the game.
Columbus was helped by John Jackson, who registered one goal. Jackson scored 8:03 into the third period to make the score 4-2 Peoria. Shawn Bates provided the assist. Columbus also got points from Louis Belisle, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. Kyle Johnson also scored for Columbus. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Andy Bathgate, Rusty Hafner, and Tyler Henry, who each chipped in one.
Jacobson rejected 29 shots on goal for the Rivermen. Peoria registered two goals on eight power play opportunities. Shannon Szabados made 44 saves for the Cottonmouths on 49 shots.
