Best Shots of the Game; Columbus outlasts Macon 4 – 2

phn-bsog  COLUMBUS, GA – The game between the Columbus Cottonmouths and Macon Mayhem was tight through all 60 minutes, but in the end Columbus emerged with a 4-2 win.

The Cottonmouths gained the winning advantage on a goal by Shawn Bates 9:33 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.  Bates was all over the ice for Columbus, as he racked up two goals in the win.

The Cottonmouths put 39 shots on net during the contest, more than the 25.4 they average per game.

Ben O’Quinn also scored for Columbus. Other players who recorded assists for Columbus were Kyle Johnson, Kyle Brodie, John Jackson, and Rusty Hafner, who contributed one each.   Andy Bathgate and Cody Freeman each chipped in two.

Macon kept Columbus’ goalie Shannon Szabados busy throughout the game, making 31 saves on 33 shots.

Macon was helped by Matt Robertson, who registered two goals. Robertson scored the first of his two goals at 10:10 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Macon Mayhem. Shawn Skelly assisted on the tally. Robertson’s next tally made the score 2-2 with 11:04 left in the third period. Connor P. Toomey picked up the assist. Michael Montagna also picked up an assist for the Mayhem.

The Cottonmouths totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-1 on the power play. Garrett Bartus recorded 35 saves for Macon. The Mayhem totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major, and had no power play opportunities.
