In Detroit Sunday night, Jonathan Bernier picked up his third shutout of the season with a 38-save performance in a 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
“I felt great from the get-go,” Bernier said. “We felt we dominated this game from the start and we wanted it.”
Michael Grabner was the lone goal scorer of the game when he beat Petr Mrazek with less than a minute to play in the middle frame.
“(I) just tried to get to the net and trying to protect the puck and I got knocked down and slid into the net,” Grabner said. “I saw the puck out of the corner of my eye go in and I knew that I didn’t touch the goalie. … I didn’t feel it hit me or anything. I got a lucky bounce.”
Mrazek made 26 saves in the loss.
“You’ve got to start with getting pucks to the net and then you’ve got to try to be there for second chances,” Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. “I thought we had some quality chances but not enough. Once again, it comes down to power play, we didn’t really create enough there today either. When teams play like this, it’s really tight. You’ve got to take advantage when they’re in the box.”
Before Sunday, Grabner had not scored since early January.
The goal came as Grabner was hauled down by Detroit’s Danny DeKeyser just ahead of the puck inching across the goal line.
“He had a breakaway, just tried to make a first save and you know, it went off my pads straight on his leg or [rear end] and went in with him,” Mrazek said. “So I didn’t see if it went in before he moved the net or not.”
