In Boston, Patrice Bergeron scored a natural hat trick on Thursday night, in a 5-1 shelling of the Detroit Red Wings. Bergeron added a fourth goal for good measure in the 5-1 win.
The natural hat trick came over the first two periods as Boston built, or rather Bergeron, built a 3-0 lead.
“Honestly, I’ve been in the League long enough to know [the goals are] going to come back,” Bergeron said. “My game is not just about scoring goals. I think you always have to go back to what you want to do to help your team win, do those things and worry about details, and the rest falls into place.”
Bergeron’s first two goals came off the power play.
“Everything [Bergeron] touched tonight went in,” Boston’s Brad Marchand said. “When he gets on a roll, he really gets on a roll. … Just because he goes through a stretch where maybe he doesn’t score as much as he used to, he’s still so effective for our team and he’s the heart and soul of our team. It was a matter of time before he had a night like he did tonight.”
Jeremy Swayman got the Bruins the win off 14 saves.
Boston improved to 5-3-0.
Lucas Raymond got the Sens on the board in the eighth minute of the third period; he scored off the power play.
“I was satisfied with our effort and compete,” Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill said. “I didn’t think our effort and compete were poor, even to the end there. … There were moments of execution where we’ve just got to be better. … In the end, you’ve got to find a way to score, so we’re going to have to do a better job of that.”
Mike Reilly scored a shorthanded goal for Boston, just 24 seconds after Raymond scored for a 4-1 lead.
Detroit dropped to 4-5-2.
“We’ve got to keep staying positive and come to the rink tomorrow with good energy,” the Red Wings’ Marc Staal said. “There aren’t really any moral victories tonight. We’ve just got to wake up tomorrow, get better and go into Buffalo (on Saturday) and try to get a win.”
Bergeron completed his night with a goal in the 16th minute of the third for the 5-1 final.
Thomas Greiss took the loss for the Detroit on 32 saves.
