Grand Rapids, MI – The Rockford IceHogs stormed into Van Andel Arena and came away with a 3-1 victory on Friday night over the Grand Rapids Griffins. IceHogs’ goaltender Stanislav Berezhnoy made 31 saves in the win.
Berezhnoy was busy in the Rockford net in the 1st period, turning away 11 Grand Rapids’ shots.
In the middle frame, the Griffins and IceHogs traded power play chances, but neither team could find the games opening goal. Grand Rapids’ net minder Sebastian Cossa held serve in the 2nd frame.
Finally five minutes into the 3rd period, the IceHogs opened the scoring. Ryan Gagnier skated down the far wing on an odd-man rush and snapped a shot under Cossa’s blocker for the 1-0 lead.
The Griffins pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker and after Berezhnoy made back-to-back saves in tight, Dominic Toninato gave Rockford a 2-0 lead.
Grand Rapids got one goal back on a wrap around from John Leonard to cut the deficit to 2-1 before Samuel Savoie iced the game with another empty-net tally.
