Belleville Senators score four goals in the second period to beat Laval

Saturday night was a busy one for Sens fans. The Ottawa Senators played against the Toronto Maple Leafs in a nationally televised matchup. They ultimately lost 3-1 in an all-around poor effort. However, there was another game of interest for Sens fans happening at the exact same time.

Game two of the AHL season, featuring the Belleville Senators facing off against the Laval Rocket. While fans were busy watching their beloved team’s first loss of the season against their arch-rival, the Baby Sens were putting on a show.

Unlike in previous years when the B-Sens stumbled out of the gate, last night, they charged right over the hapless Rocket. The first period saw very little action, no goals and the shots favoured the Sens 12-7.

Nearly four minutes into the second period, newly acquired forward Jake Lucchini started the scoring with a wrist shot that beat Laval goalie Michael McNiven. He quickly followed that up with another goal just six minutes later to put the B-Sens up 2-0.

Mathew Wedman and Lassi Thomson potted another couple of tallies to bring the score up to 4-0 at the second intermission.

If the Sens thought they could go into the third period and walk over the Rocket, they were mistaken. With eight minutes left in the game, Laurent Dauphin scored his first of the season, ending Mads Sogaard’s shutout bid.

With over three minutes to go in the game, the Rocket pulled their goalie in a desperate attempt to get even. Veteran forward Pontus Aberg took full advantage of the situation to score his first of the season on the wide-open cage.

But the Rocket weren’t quite done yet, as Daughin scored again with just over two minutes left on the clock. The Sens held out a tense finish to earn their first victory of the season.

Mads Sogaard was the first star of the game, turning away 24 of 26 shots. The second star was Jake Lucchini, who scored two goals. The third star was Belleville Senators forward Kole Sherwood, who assisted on two Belleville goals.
