Beau-tiful Walleye OT win

TOLEDO, Ohio – Beau Schmitz sent a wrist shot into the back of the net with just 9.4 seconds left in overtime to beat Wheeling 4-3 in front of a standing room only crowd of 8,300 at the Huntington Center Saturday night. Toledo has an overall record of 38-12-2-1 and is 17-5-1-0 at home.

The power play for the Walleye struck first thanks to a one-timer from Alden Hirschfeld (19th) at 2:53 of the first period. Wheeling countered with a goal at the 14-minute mark. Tyson Spink kept his goal scoring streak alive when he blasted a slap shot past Wheeling goaltender Doug Carr at 19:10 of the period.

The Nailers used a five on three power play to tie the game at two at 9:18 of the second period. After the Nailers took a 3-2 lead, Shane Berschbach (11th) wristed the Walleye into a tie game at 15:58 of the second period.

The game remained even at three until Berschbach collected the puck along the wall and fed Beau Schmitz cutting to the front of the Wheeling net. His wrist shot went off of the glove of Wheeling goaltender Doug Carr and into the back of the net for his third goal of the year.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Cal Heeter stopped 25 of the 28 Wheeling shots he faced and his record is 11-1-0-0 on the season. Tyson Spink has a scored a goal in six straight games, a season high.
