BC rallies to beat Harvard, advance to Beanpot finals

Monday, Feb. 1 marked the kick off the 64th annual Beanpot Tournament taking place at the TD Garden. This tournament pits four local school against each other. The Harvard Crimson faced off against the Boston College Eagles in the first game of the night.

Thatcher Demo started in net for the Eagles opposed by Merrick Madsen for the Crimson. The Eagles started out quickly taking the puck off the opening face-off. Just 1:31 Casey Fitzgerald was able to sneak one past Madsen for the game’s first goal, with Ryan Fitzgerald and Colin White assisting.Boston College Eagles

BC dominated much of the early part of the first limiting Harvard to outside chances that missed the net. But Jack Donato took a pass up the middle from Tyler Moy, split the defense and roofed it to tie the game at one. The goal was also Harvard’s first shot of the game.

BC continued to have their way with Harvard, but the Crimson were started to build some momentum. Adam Baughman scored for the Crimson assisted by Alexander Kerfoot and Jimmy Vesey. The goal was reviewed for what looked like goalie interference, but the call on the ice stood as a good goal.

Harvard started to push the pace after taking the lead force Demo to stand tall in the Eagles net. The first period ended with the Crimson leading 2-1 and the shots 8-7 for BC. The second period started on a more even playing field between the two teams as they traded early rushes.

As the second period progressed the Eagles put the Crimson back on their heels. Jake Horton took a tripping call for the Crimson to put the Eagles on the power play. Zach Sanford squeaked a puck past Madsen to tie the game at two, Alex Tuch and Ian McCoshen were given the assists on the goal.

Just under three minutes later the Eagles went back on the power play as Clay Anderson went off for interference. Once again the Eagles capitalized on the power play, this time it was freshman Colin White assisted by Teddy Doherty and Ian McCoshen. The Crimson settled down after those two power plays and started to attack the BC net.

Demo stood strong however turing away all of the Crimson’s chances. The second period ended with BC leading 3-2 and the shots 20 to 17 in favor of BC.

The third period started out the same way, with the Eagles and Crimson trading early chances. But the Eagles quickly took over the third dominating the Crimson in their own end. The Crimson struggled against the consistent BC attack and Madsen was forced to make so big saves.

As the period wore on the Crimson battled back and got some quality chances of their own. But as the game went on Demo continued to get better stoning all of Harvard’s chances. Harvard could not find the back of net and as play expired fell to the Eagles 3-2.

The final shots were 33-23 for BC. Harvard Coach Ted Donato said he thought that the team played well in the first period, but couldn’t pick their game up for the rest of the game. BC will move onto next Monday’s championship game against Boston University.
