Columbus, GA – The race for the division champion comes down to the dragons and thunderbirds. There is only a two-point difference between the two teams with three games left. This rivalry has built over of the past few seasons and it sure didn’t help with the game tonight.
The first period started out quickly with a fight at the 1:36 mark. Shortly after the fight, the thunderbirds would find the night with Ford scoring at the 5:33 mark. The dragons would have three other penalties through the period, but the score would remain 1-0 going into the intermission.
The second period would be more disciplined with only three penalties, but two of those would be boarding calls. The thunderbirds would score a shorthanded goal with Schnapp getting an unassisted goal at the 19:54 mark in the period.
Coming into the third period, the thunderbirds have a 2-0 lead over the dragons. Things would continue to heat up between the players as the physicality increased. This wouldn’t stop the thunderbirds from scoring a third goal with Buttitta slapping one in from the high slot at the 9:41 mark. The dragons would respond and prevent a shutout with Aldworth scoring at the 19:13 mark. This would be the final score with the thunderbirds defeating the dragons 3-1.
Next weekend is the most important weekend for both teams. The division champion and the important seeding of first or second will be determined next weekend. There is a home and home series with the teams playing in Carolina on Friday and back in Columbus on Saturday.
The third star of the game is Aldworth of the dragons.
The second star of the game is Schnapp of the thunderbirds.
The first star of the game is Babik of the thunderbirds.
