Batherson sends Senators to 2-1 victory with OT winner Pens' offense remains on milk cartons

In Ottawa, Michael Bunting scored with 23 seconds left in regulation to get the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins even with the Senators, 1-1, on Tuesday night.Bunting scored off a rebound of a shot from high on the left circle.

The goal was enough to force extra time.

Drake Batherson ended the night when he scored with 3:13 gone in the extra session to give the Senators 2-1 win.

“They tie it up with 20 seconds left, I feel like that’s been the story all year with teams tying it up late,” Batherson said. “Overtime was back and forth; I think the fans got their money’s worth. That was a good outcome.”

The winner was scored off a shot from the near the goal line on the left side of the Pens’ cage.

Joonas Korpisalo made 34 saves in the win.

The Senators moved to 26-33-4.

“After the first period [assistant coach Daniel Alfredsson] told me to calm down,” Senators coach Jacques Martin said. “It was a good message because I’m usually not very emotional behind the bench. When you play Pittsburgh, you get a little more emotional. So even at my age, I’m learning.”

The game was scoreless into the third period until Jake Sanderson broke the ice just past the midway point of the third period for a 1-0 lead to the Sens.

“It’s been a while. It’s been frustrating for sure, but we were resilient,” Sanderson said. “We’re trying to stick with it. For our fans, we’re going to battle until the end here, no matter what.”

The Penguins dropped to 28-27-9.

“I didn’t think we did as good a job tonight getting to the net front,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. “We’ve got to do a better job fighting for that area of the rink, making the sight lines difficult and creating more broken plays where we have a chance to create off of that initial shot.”

Pittsburgh’s offense has disappeared on them. They have just two goals in their through four straight loss.

Tristan Jarry made 37 saves in the loss.

“I thought I was seeing it well,” Jarry said. “It was just one of those nights. You always wish you could do a little more in a loss. I think just bringing that same consistency every night will help the guys and we’ll start stringing together some wins.”
