In Brooklyn the New York Islanders’ Thomas Greiss made 31 saves to help the Isles defeat the Colorado Avalanche, 6-4, Sunday night.
The win moved New York to 8-5-1.
Nick Leddy and Jordan Eberle each struck for two goals in the win.
Rookie Mathew Barzal picked up five assists in the win.
“I’m just taking it day by day,” Barzal said . “I think sometimes you can get ahead of yourself after you have a good game here and there. But I’m just trying to take it day by day. I’ve got to prove myself every day. I’m just trying to help this team win. That’s all I really care about.”
Scott Mayfield and Johnny Boychuk also scored for the Isles.
Matt Duchene was in the lineup but left the game and arena after 10 minutes of time after his trade to the Ottawa Senators.
“The bench got a little bit short there in a hurry,” Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar said. “We’ve known it could be a possibility here the last couple of days.”
Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog struck in the middle frame for the Avs and Alexander Kerfoot scored twice in the final minute of regulation to get Colorado close.
“It was strange. Just the way it happened, early first period. Strange how it went down, but it’s over,” MacKinnon said of the Duchene trade and process.
