San Jose, CA – The San Jose Barracuda (9-1-0-1) scored twice on the power-play and used stingy defense to knock off the Stockton Heat (Calgary Flames) (4-6-1-0), 5-2, on Monday night at SAP Center at San Jose. The win was San Jose’s fourth straight and improved the Barracuda to 3-1 against the Heat this season.
Despite out-shooting and out-chancing Stockton in the first, Kerby Rychel (6) cleaned up a point shot to give the Heat a 1-0 lead on the power play at 5:01.
In the second, San Jose’s hard work would pay off as Jeremy Roy (2) snuck a shot under Jon Gillies five-hole from the center-point at 9:23 on the PP. 17 seconds later, John McCarthy powered to the net from along the goal line and Jeffrey Viel (2) jammed in the loose puck to give San Jose a 2-1 lead. At 12:31, the Barracuda completed the three-goal second when Nick DeSimone looked off a Stockton defender as he brought the puck up the right side and threaded a pass to Matt Fonteyne (2) who buried it from close range.
In the third, on San Jose’s seventh power-play of the night, Francis Perron (6) wired a shot low short-side as he brought the puck up ice along the right wing and inside the right circle at 9:07. Andrew Mangiapane (5) would cut San Jose’s lead down to two at 14:24, but DeSimone (3) put it away with an empty-netter at 19:03.
Antoine Bibeau (4-1-1) earned the win and avenged his only regulation loss on October 21 as he allowed two goals on 19 shots, while Gillies (3-4-1) took the hard-luck loss after giving up four goals on 37 shots.
