San Jose, CA – The San Jose Barracuda (28-22-7-3, 66pts) presented by Barracuda Networks fell to the San Diego Gulls (34-22-2-2, 72pts) by the score of 3-1 in front 3,939 fans at SAP Center on Easter Sunday in game five of a season long six game home stand.
San Jose outshot San Diego 35-18 but Ryan Carpenter was the only Barracuda skater to find the back of the net as Anton Khudobin made 34 saves for the Gulls. The Barracuda had two goals disallowed as Antoine Laganiere (2-1-3) and Matt Bailey (1-1-2) had big games for the Gulls.
The Gulls grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening period after goaltender Aaron Dell misplayed the puck at the side of his net and Matt Bailey (3rd) fired the puck into the empty net at 3:10. It was a rather lackluster first period as shots were 11-5 in favor of the Gulls through 20 minutes of play.
Bryan Lerg thought he had tied the score but the goal was waved off by the officials as it was ruled that the Barracuda captain knocked the puck in with his glove. Minutes later, the Gulls made it 2-0 as Antoine Laganiere (12th) was set up alone in front by Matt Bailey at 10:09 of the second period. San Jose finally struck on their 4th power play as Karl Stollery sent a slap pass to the side of the net which was tapped in past Anton Khudobin by Ryan Carpenter (15th) at 15:56. San Jose trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes of play despite holding a 24-15 shot advantage through two periods of play.
San Jose outshot San Diego 11-3 in the third period and had another goal disallowed after Nikolay Goldobin’s goal was waved off for incidental contact on the goaltender. Antoine Laganiere (13th) added an empty netter at 19:35 to give the Gulls a 3-1 road victory.
