SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Diego Gulls (11-8-0-1; 23 pts.) were blanked 3-0 for the second consecutive game by the San Jose Barracuda (10-6-0-3; 23 pts.) to close out a weekend back-to-back at SAP Center.
San Jose goaltender Troy Grosenick made 26 saves to earn his second consecutive shutout and league-leading fourth this season. Grosenick stopped all 41 shots faced this weekend to improve to 5-4-0-1 with a 1.98 goals-against average (GAA) and .928 save percentage (SV%). San Jose received goals from Rourke Chartier, Ryan
Carpetner and Timo Meier to sweep the weekend series over San Diego.
Another scoreless first period between the two clubs saw both teams hit the post late in the frame, with Gulls right wing Corey Tropp’s bid from the slot ringing off the post behind Grosenick and Barracuda right wing Timo Meier‘s shot from the right circle beating San Diego netminder Kevin Boyle but hitting the bar and bouncing out.
Early in the second frame, Boyle made a number of high-quality saves to preserve the scoreless tie, with his best stop coming midway through the second period when he slid across the crease and robbed Nikolay Goldobin with a stunning glove save.
At 11:58 of the second period, Rourke Chartier (1-0=1) broke the deadlock when he scooped up a rebound off Tim Heed’s shot and slid the puck past Boyle to give San Jose a 1-0 lead.
A few minutes later, San Jose doubled its lead with a power-play goal from veteran Ryan Carpenter who tallied his third goal of the season on a wrist shot that beat Boyle glove side. San Diego earned a couple of power play opportunities late in the period, but could not solve Grosenick.
San Jose would put the game away midway through the period when AHL rookie scoring leader Danny O’Regan found Timo Meier to finish off a two-on-one break to ice the game and help the Barracuda take all four points this weekend.
Gulls rookie goaltender Kevin Boyle (0-1-1-0) picked up the loss after stopping a career-high 40 shots for San Diego after starting only his second game of the season. His last start came 44 days ago in Manitoba in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Moose on Oct. 28.
