In Newark Friday night, the Calgary Flames made the most of extra time and Mikael Backlund bagged an overtime goal to send the Flames to their straight win, 4-3, overt the New Jersey Devils.
“We had possession of the puck and I saw [TJ Brodie] and went to get into a passing lane and he made a real nice pass to me,” Backlund said. “[Devils goalie Cory Schneider] is a quick goalie, so I shot it high and quick.”
Brodie got the assist on the winner, one of four assists on the night.
“I had a long meeting with Brodie and told him I wanted him to shoot more pucks and not pass so much and make sure he’s getting pucks on the net and he gets four assists,” Flames coach Glen Gulutzan said. “He didn’t listen to me at all so I’m going to take credit for those assists.”
Brian Elliott continued to his recent streak of solid goaltending and made 26 saves for the win.

Calgary’s regulation goals came from Sean Monahan, Kris Versteeg, and Matt Stajan .
Trailing 2-0 in the game, the Devils scored three in the second period to take a 3-2 lead to the third.
Adam Henrique, Pavel Zacha and Kyle Palmieri all scored in the middle frame for the Devils.
“I don’t think you look at it for moral victories,” Palmieri said. “It’s time to string wins together. A point is nice but we need two points.”
Cory Schneider made 24 saves in the loss.
“Both teams played with some pace, had some chances,” Schneider said. “For us it’s tough to have the lead going into the third and not coming away with two points.”
New Jersey has now lost seven straight in Newark going 0-5-2.
“We have to find a way to win at home. Obviously we started the year great at home (8-0-2). Right now it has gone the opposite way. We have to find a way to put points on the board whether we are on the road or at home. It doesn’t matter,” Henrique said of the loss and skid on home ice.
