Backlund, Elliot push Flames past Avs, 4-1

In Calgary Wednesday night Brian Elliott made 17 saves for his fifth straight win, 4-1, over the Colorado Avalanche.

Mikael Backlund scored a goal in his fifth straight game to help the Flames improve to 21-17-2.

“It’s great,” Backlund said. “It’s always fun winning. It’s the best part of this game. That’s what we’re here for, to win games. It makes life a lot easier if you’re winning.”

The Flames also got goals from Kris Versteeg, Alex Chiasson and Johnny Gaudreau.

“This is the best I’ve seen him in his career,” Giordano said of Backlund’s play. “That’s saying a lot because he has been really good the last couple years. He’s a two-way centerman who doesn’t get the acknowledgement all the time because he doesn’t have the high-end numbers offensively. This year things are going in for him.”

Patrick Wiercioch scored the Avs only goal in the loss.

Calvin Pickard made 33 saves as Colorado fell to 12-25-1 on the year.

“We’ve been pressing and when you’re pressing, you see a guy open and you kind of double clutch,” the Avs’ Jarome Iginla said. “You’re just not letting it happen. It’s a quick game, you’ve got to let it happen and play with confidence. We’re battling that right now.”

It was Colorado’s fifth straight loss.

“It’s something you keep working at, keep talking about it and you’ve got to get some good things going and work for those bounces, get some things going the right way so guys can feel better, because it’s been a tough stretch and we know that. Nobody’s happy with these outcomes,” Iginla said of Colorado’s efforts to turn their skid and season around.
