Avs sweep season series from Pens in 4-2 win

In Denver Monday night, Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves to help the Colorado Avalanche defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-2.

Tyson Barrie struck for two goals in the Avs’ win.

“We got outplayed,” Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan said. “We got outplayed in the second period badly. I thought they were hungrier than we were. We took penalties, I think we took three or four penalties in the second period. That doesn’t help, but we got outplayed. They were better than us.”

Evgeni Malkin and Chad Ruhwedel scored for the Pens who dropped to 17-15-3 with the loss and ended a roadie with a 1-2-0 record.

“You can see we did not play great. We tried, but not [for] 60 minutes. It’s not working anymore. In the first period we had [18] shots but one goal. We can’t score anymore,” Malkin said after the game.

In their last five games, the Pens are 1-4-0.

J.T. Compher and Mikko Rantanen added single markers.

“I’m feeling good,” Compher said. “I mean, it’s nice to get one to go in. It’s been a little bit and I’ve had some chances but I’ve gotten some more ice time recently and I’m just trying to take full advantage of it.”

The Avs improved to 16-15-2..

“We’re growing as a team, we’re getting better,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said. ” We did a lot of really good things. We had some get-up-and-go on the offensive side of it. We were skating on the pucks and creating and had lots of pace to our game. We were a dangerous team and played on our toes. I think it just shows we’re gradually becoming more consistent at what we’re supposed to do.”
