Avs rally for OT win, lead series, 3-1

In Denver, the Colorado Avalanche erased a 2-0 deficit in the third period and Mikko Rantanen struck midway through the first overtime period  to send the Avs to a 3-2 win and 3-1 series lead over the Calgary Flames.

“Carl (Soderberg) made an unreal pass, so just tried to get it to the net, and it went in,” Rantanen said.

Rantanen forced the extra session when he knotted the game at 2-2 with less then three minutes remaining in regulation.

Philipp Grubauer made 35 saves to get the win.

J.T. Compher got the rally going past the midway point of the third period.

“It was a great pass by [Nieto] from behind the net to [Calvert] going to the net like he always does,” Compher said. “We like to play with layers going to the net. He got stopped, the puck popped out to me, and I was able to put it in.”

Elias Lindholm and Derek Ryan gave the Flames the 2-0 lead they could not hold.

“It felt like we stopped playing a little and let them come to us waves after waves,” Lindholm said. “It’s tough. We played well, Smitty played well for us. I think still we can play better than we did, but it’s a step in the right direction from last game (a 6-2 loss).”

Mike Smith made 49 saves in the loss.

“It’s tough,” Smith said of the winning goal. “We get a power play, we get a chance in overtime, and the goalie makes a good save, and they bury one of their chances. That’s the way it goes, and the series keeps moving forward.

“Cross-seam pass to Rantanen, and he’s got an unbelievable release. Buried it.”
