Avs hold off Blues for 5-3 win

In Denver, the Colorado Avalanche got a goal from rookieCale Makar, his 11th for a franchise record, and the Avs beat the St Louis Blues, 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.

“I’m very honored and stuff, (but) it’s not something that I’m going to go home and celebrate,” Makar said. “It’s a credit to how well these guys have been playing. We have so many smart players on this team in terms of hockey sense and that’s why everybody’s been producing so well and getting career highs.”

Philipp Grubauer made 21 saves in the win.

Oskar Sundqvist, Alex Pietrangelo and David Perron scored for the Avs.

“We’re frustrated, but these are the times when you look at the big picture, and the big picture is we’ve put ourselves in a good spot here for the second half of the season,” Pietrangelo said. “Good opportunity to take a break, rest up.”

Nathan MacKinnon, Tyson Jost and Andre Burakovsky scored for the Aves.

“They won the Stanley Cup last year, so they’re automatically going to be the measuring stick for every team that plays them,” Colorado’s Ian Cole said. “They had our number earlier in the year when we played a little loose, a little wide open, and they made us pay for it. We’ve made a conscious effort to get it together and play a little more connected.”

Gabriel Landeskog added an empty net goal to seal it.

Jordan Binnington got the start but did not make it out of the second period before getting the hook; he made just seven saves on 11 shots.

“We come into here, it’s a tough place to play and they’re a very good team, I thought that we played a pretty solid game,” Blues coach Craig Berube said. “We didn’t win, but our guys are dialed in. A break is OK right now. When we come back, it’s a tough schedule. Got to be ready to go.”

Jake Allen made six saves in a mop up role.
