Avs get past Flyers, 5-2

In Denver Saturday night, Semyon Varlamov made 35 saves to help the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Colin Wilson struck twice for the Avs in the win.

“It feels good to be making plays out there and contributing offensively right now,” said Wilson, who had six goals in 56 games last season, missing 26 games with various injuries. “I did a lot of work on the ice to get my confidence back. It’s a good start. It’s been two good games and I’m in a good position right now. I feel substantially better than I did at this point last year.”

Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and J.T. Compher also scored for Colorado.

Mikhail Vorobyev and Sean Couturier scored for the Flyers.

The Avs are 2-0-0 to start the new season.

“To start out 2-0 is exactly what we wanted to do at home. We’ve got a bunch of road games coming up and it’s going to be a challenge. It’s a new challenge for this group,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “We have to be better on the road this year than we were last year. Hopefully we can take a little bit out of what we did in these two opening games and build on it.”

Brian Elliott made 30 savesin the losing effort.

“There’s a lot of good, there’s a lot to be worked on and that’s to be expected at this time of year. I thought there were points there that we controlled a lot of the action but we didn’t really get anything out of it. You got to take those good things, but I thought we could get to the net a little bit more,” Elliott said after the loss.
