Avs edge Canadiens, 2-1

Mikko Rantanen had his point streak snapped in the Colorado Avalanche’s last game.

On Tuesday night, Rantanen started a new streak with a goal and two points in a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Gabriel Landeskog also scored for the Avs; his goal came with just 35 seconds gone in the third period to break a 1-1 tie.

There was a question on the goal because of possible goalie interference bu the goal stood.

“Watching on the video it was one of those that could have gone either way,” Landeskog said. “I’ve seen softer ones being called back and I’ve seen harder ones being called goals. I thought they got that one right.”

Philipp Grubauer made 35 saves to get the win.

“Obviously we want to cut the goals against down, it’s been way too much,” Grubauer said. “We can’t ask the guys always to score five or six goals to win a game. We have to tighten up and it starts with us goalies back there. If there’s a breakdown, we’re there to make up for it.

“There’s always something to improve, even on that goal and a couple of shots because I got lucky and they bounced off. I have to look at the video because they could have scored four or five. I need to carry this momentum into the next one.”

Brendan Gallagher scored the only goal for the Habs.

Grubauer is 8-0-3 in his last 11 games.

“I just felt [Grubauer] looked really solid in the net, like he was in control of the game,” Avs head coach Jarad Bednar said. “I haven’t felt that way about our goaltending for the last little bit, and that’s what we need. We need those guys to take control of it and to be real sharp and to be on top of their game and give us a chance to sort of find ourselves.”

Carey Price made 24 saves in the loss.

“The first five minutes it was a little dicey. We picked up our game. We could’ve done a little bit better as far as scoring opportunities and getting on the inside and finding ways to jump on some of those loose pucks. As a team, if we could’ve done a little bit more of that we might’ve helped ourselves,” Canadiens head coach Claude Julien said after the loss.
