Things were starting to look positive for the Colorado Avalanche of late.
But Friday night had the Avs in San Jose to face the Sharks and the Avs just did not have enough.
Marcus Sorensen struck twice for San Jose to a 4-3 win and move them within five points of the idle Calgary Flames for first in the Pacific Division.
“I played with good players,” Sorensen said. “They do plays that make me better so it’s easy for me to come out there. It’s good to be back. It’s no fun to be watching.”
Martin Jones made 22 saves in the win.
The Sharks improved 38-19-8.
“The first two periods were a little on and off for us. We couldn’t get to the neutral zone, but in the third we really took over and started playing, winning battles and shooting the puck. The third period is certainly something we can take with us,” Gabriel Landeskog (three assists) said after the loss.
Nikita Zadorov, Mikko Rantanen and Samuel Girard scored for Colorado who dropped to 28-25-15.
“We needed to start the game with a chip on our shoulder,” Rantanen said. “And we didn’t have it. We found it in the third. In the third we had urgency. If we had that in the first two it might have been a different game.”
Timo Meier and Joe Pavelski also scored for the Sharks.

Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves in the loss.
“We were hungrier in the third then we were in the first 40 minutes,” Avs head coach Jared Bednar said. “In the last 20, we won more battles, won more races, all the things we needed to come up to win the game.”
