Avs climb into wild card with win in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG – The streak continues as the Jets have failed to win more than two games in a row as they lost a very important game to the Colorado Avalanche, 2-1, Monday night. The Avalanche now move four points up on the Jets and have also moved into the final Wild Card position in the West.

Winnipeg falls to 21-22-3 on the season with 45 points.

“I really liked our first and third periods,” Jets coach Paul Maurice said. “We had enough offense there to have a better result in a tight game. There wasn’t a whole lot of easy offense to be had.”200px-Colorado_Avalanche_logo_svg

The Jets seem to be snake bitten when they dominate teams as was the case Monday night where the Jets threw 37 shots at Avs goalie Semyon Varlamov who made 36 saves and was 42 seconds away from a shutout before giving up a goal.

“I think the entire team played well,” Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said. “It was an important game for us, and it was important to win that hockey game. I thought we were really strong for at least a good 50 minutes.”

This was another one of those games that the Jets just couldn’t find a way to find the back of the net; more valuable points lost in the standings.

The Avalanche did block 21 shots and the Jets missed the net 20 times for a total of 78 shot attempts. It seemed like every time the Jets were in good scoring spot the Avalanche had one or two guys right there blocking the shot.

Blake Wheeler led the Jets with 10 shots on goal and had 17 attempts, quite the night for Wheeler who seems to be getting better every night.

Joel Armia broke the shut out with his second of the season a beauty as he took a pass from Mathieu Perreault and roofed one by Varlamov.

The Avalanche got goals from Carl Soderberg  his ninth and Jarome Iginla‘s 13th, a power play marker it was Iginla’s 602nd career goal moving him into 18th place all time for goals scored.

“It was a big goal for the power play,” Iginla said. “We had gotten some chances. To get one there and be able to go into the third up 2-0 in a big game, it felt good as a group.”

Connor Hellebuyck made 32 saves for the Jets taking the loss.

JC Lipon made his NHL debut for the Jets as he was recalled Sunday; the 2013 draft pick a fan favorite for the Manitoba Moose played 7:11 and had one hit and looked good playing in his first game .

The Jets will face the Nashville Predators on Thursday night in another huge division battle.
