Aviators stage dramatic comeback for win

BROOKLYN, NY – The New York Aviators scored four straight goals to cap off an amazing comeback against the Danbury Whalers, and skated off with a 6-5 shootout win in Federal Hockey League action. Matt Puntureri tallied two goals in the shootout, including the game winner, while Mike Thomson tallied a pair of goals and an assist in the victory.  Igor Karlov grabbed four points on the night for the Whalers in a losing effort. <:u1:p> After a pair of fights just 1:40 into the first period, the Whalers cashed in on two power play goals and took the early 2-0 lead.  Karlov deposited home a rebound in the slot off Velasquez’ shot at the 11:10 mark for his 10th goal of the season.  Shortly after, Dannel Malloy picked up his third tally of the year on another loose puck in front with 6:54 left in the opening period. <:u1:p> Chris Seifert then snapped a wrister from the far side circle over the glove of A’s net minder Kevin Druce to give the Whalers a 3-0 lead on his ninth goal of the campaign.  New York cut into the lead with 2:34 left in the first, as Michael Thomson netted his fourth of the year from Chris Holmes to cut the Danbury lead to 3-1. T <:u1:p> he Whalers picked up where they left off in the second period, as Karlov notched is second of the night sliding it past Druce 7:50 in.  Lucas Schott joined in on the fun for Danbury, as he put home a loose puck off of Paul Arnott’s shot at the 13:55 mark.  That goal chased Druce from the net, as Pete Dundovich came in on relief. <:u1:p> New York did not go away, though, with another late tally from Casey Mignone.  Mignone charged in on the near side and lifted the puck over Whalers’ goalie Nick Neidert to cut the lead to 5-2 on his eighth of the season. <:u1:p> The A’s stormed back with three goals in the third period to tie the game at 5-5 and took it into overtime.  The extra session produced a scoreless frame, which carried the contest into the shootout. <:u1:p> Dundovich stopped four of seven tries, and earned his third win of the seaon while stopping seven shots in regulation.  Nick Niedert picks up his seventh loss of the season.
