Aviators drop Danbury, 8-1

BROOKLYN, NY – Michael Thomson and Matt Puntureri both notched four points to help lead the New York Aviators to an 8-1 win over the Danbury Whalers on New Year’s Eve in Federal Hockey League action. The Aviators jumped to an early, 3-1, lead after the first period. Thomson netted goals nine and ten of the season to kick-start the A’s offense. New York’s momentum was slowed down a bit though, after Danbury forward Igor Karlov put home his 16th of the year at the 14:48 mark. However, with four seconds left in the opening frame, Puntureri tallied his 15th on the power play from David Inman on a beautiful one timer in the slot to regain the two-goal edge for the A’s. The Aviators jumped on Danbury in the middle frame with their second straight goal from Angelo Serse to push New York’s lead to 4-1. Serse found a loose puck in the far side circle and lifted it over Whalers’ net minder Nick Niedert for his eighth marker of the season.  Just fifty seconds later, Andrew Scampoli found the back to give New York a commanding 6-1 lead. The third period would be all New York with three goals coming from Chris Holmes, Puntureri, and Jesse Felten. This is the fifth straight win the A’s picked up over Danbury, and move to 12-12-2 on the season. The Whalers drop to 10-13-2 on the season with their fourth consecutive loss. Kevin Druce gained his ninth win in net for the A’s turning aside 28 shots, while Nick Niedert is charged with the loss. The New York Aviators return home on January 6th to take on the Danbury Whalers. Comment@prohockeynews.com
