DENVER, Co. – On a bright sunny morning at Coors Field, home of the Colorado Rockies Baseball team, in downtown Denver, Co. plans to host a different sort of sporting competition were announced.

A group of dignitaries associated with the Colorado Avalanche, the Detroit Red Wings, the  NHL, local NCAA  hockey programs, the Colorado Rockies, as well as the Governor of Colorado,  came together in a press briefing to outline plans for the three outdoor games that will comprise the week long celebration of outdoor hockey in conjunction with 20 years of Colorado Avalanche hockey

To kick things off the Colorado College Tigers based in Colorado Springs, Co. will play a regular season game against arch rivals Denver University Pioneers on the outdoor ice at Coors field on February 20, 2016 Coaches Jim Montgomery from DU and Mile Haviland with Colorado College attended the press conference to support the outdoor experience made available to them.

On Friday night February 26 the Avalanche and Red Wings alumni teams will face off against each other on Coors field ice. Current Avalanche GM Joe Sakic and head coach Patrick Roy will be joined by fellow hall of famer Peter Forsberg and several other high profile former members of Colorado and Detroit  teams of the past 20 years.

Detroit Red Wings Special Assistant to the General Manager, Kris Draper, speaking on behalf of the Red Wings said former Wings Steve Yzerman, Paul Coffery, Sergei Fedorov, Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Osgood Mike Vernon and possibly Dominik Hasek  would put on the red and white of the winged wheel for the alumni game.

The Coors Light Stadium Series game will  be held on Saturday February 27, 2016 when the current incarnation of the Avalanche and Red Wings play a regular season contest in what should be a great atmosphere in the specially built ice rink on the baseball field at 20th and Blake.

To conclude the formal portion of the press conference NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman took the opportunity to present Colorado Avalanche Captain, Gabe Landeskog, with his number 92 jersey to be worn in the Coors Light Stadium Series game. The specialty jerseys incorporate the “C” for Colorado inspired by the Colorado state flag with red and gray stripes and white numbers on a blue patch on the sleeves.
