PHN’s Best Shots of the Game: Fort Worth Brahmas vs. Missouri Mavericks 12/22/12

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Fort Worth Brahmas rebounded with a convincing 6-2 victory over the Missouri Mavericks at the Fort Worth Convention Center behind a four-goal first period.   The Brahmas scored three goals in the matter of 57 seconds early in the first period. Chad Woollard scored the Brahmas first two goals at 4:16 and 4:50, respectively. For Woollard, the Brahmas franchise leader in goals and points, the two scores give him seven on the season. Daniel Spivak fired a wrister by Missouri netminder Austin Lee at 5:13, giving Fort Worth a 3-0 lead and ending Lee’s night early. Adam Hogg added the Brahmas’ fourth first-period goal at 15:24 as he found himself behind the defense and put the puck past the Mavericks’ second goaltender of the night, Mike Clemente.   Podge Turnbull score the first Missouri goal at 7:41 of the second period, cutting the Brahmas’ lead to 4-1. Just two minutes later, Sy Nutkevitch was taken down from behind as he streaked towards the net and was awarded a penalty shot. Nutkevitch converted, notching his sixth goal of the season.   Kenton Miller added the Mavericks’ second goal at 1:29 of the third period, but Fort Worth net minder Brad Fogal shut the door from then on. Hogg scored an empty-net goal with 49 seconds to play in regulation. For Hogg, it was his second of the night and eighth of the season.   Fogal stopped 37 of 29 shots between the posts for the Brahmas, earning his seventh win of the season. Lee made only four saves on seven shots before being replaced by Clemente. Clemente stopped nine of 12 over the final 51:43.   Both teams came up empty on the power play. The Brahmas were 0-for-3 with the man advantage while the Mavericks were 0-for-6.   For Forth Worth, Saturday night’s win extends the team’s point streak at home to 10 games. NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas – The Fort Worth Brahmas defeated the Wichita Thunder by the score of 5-1 Wednesday night, extending their point streak at home to nine games.   The Brahmas jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Derrick Pallis streaked down the left side and snuck a backhanded shot by Wichita netminder Kevin Regan at the 7:06 mark of the first period.   Fort Worth extended its lead to 3-0 in the second period, as Phil Fox and Nick Schneider each notched a goal in the middle frame.   Just 4:30 into the third period, Fox added his second goal of the night on a Brahmas’ 5-on-3 power play. For Fox, it was his third consecutive game with two goals. 44 seconds later, Adam Hogg scored the Brahmas’ second power play goal of the period, his sixth score of the season.   Kevin Young, the CHL’s reigning player of the week, scored a third-period goal for the Thunder to ruin the shutout for Fort Worth goaltender Kristofer Westblom.   Westblom made 24 saves on 25 Wichita shots, moving to 6-1-2 this season. The 25-year-old goalie improved his league-best goals against average to 1.52 and regained the CHL lead in save percentage at .936.   Regan stopped 17 of 22 shots in net for the Thunder before being replaced by backup Torrie Jung for the final 14:36. NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas – Chad Woollard and Phil Fox provided the offense for the the Brahmas Saturday night, as Fort Worth defeated the Arizona Sundogs by the score of 4-1. Chad Woollard got the scoring started at the 12:05 mark of the first period as he stepped in front of Arizona netminder Adam Russo and deflected a Ross Rouleau slapshot from the half-wall into the back of the net. Phil Fox, who entered the game with a team-high 10 goals and 18 points, extended the lead to 2-0 4:53 into the second period as he buried home a rebound off of a Calin Wild shot. Woollard notched his second goal of the night and fifth of the season just 0:24 into the third period as he too finished a rebound – this one off of a Rouleau wrister. Matt Tassone ended the Arizona drought with 5:45 to play in regulation with his third goal of the season, first with the Sundogs. But only 49 seconds later, Fox got the score back, finding the back of the net for the second time of the night and 12th time this season. Westblom was once again stingy between the posts for the Brahmas, making 17 saves on 18 shots. The 25-year-old goalie improved on his league-leading goals against average (1.41) and save percentage (.936). Russo stopped 25 of the 29 shots he faced, falling to 4-5-3 on the season. The Brahmas scored a season-high three power play goals, ending a four-game drought without a conversion on the man advantage. Fort Worth went 3-for-4 on the power play, while Arizona failed to convert on five opportunities. With Saturday’s victory, the Brahmas extended their point streak at home to seven games, dating back to November 21st. NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas – The Fort Worth Brahmas outlasted the Tulsa Oilers by the score of 1-0 Sunday afternoon, extending their win streak at home to six games. The Brahmas got their one and only goal at 17:54 of the first period when Erik Spady found an open Riley Boychuk behind the defense. Boychuk beat Tulsa netminder Ian Keserich on the breakaway for his fifth goal of the season and first game-winner. Brad Fogal was stingy between the posts for Fort Worth, stopping all 21 shots on net en route to his first and the Brahmas’ league-leading third shutout of the season.
With the win, Fogal improved to 6-5-1 on the season with a 2.89 goals against average and .897 save percentage. Keserich made 26 saves on 27 shots in net for the Oilers but took the loss to fall to 5-9-0. With Sunday’s victory, the Brahmas extended their win streak at home to six games, dating back to November 21st. Fort Worth is now 7-1-3 in front of its hometown faithful. ALLEN, Texas – The Fort Worth Brahmas had their three-game win streak snapped Sunday afternoon as they fell to the Allen Americans by the score of 4-2. Allen got off to a hot start, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first period behind goals from Jarret Lukin and Anthony Maiani. The Brahmas got back in the game with a strong second period, cutting the deficit in half. Nick Schneider got Fort Worth on the board at 5:12 when he fired a slapshot from between the circles past Allen netminder Aaron Dell. After Brian McMillin put the Americans up 3-1, Shawn Szydlowski notched his third goal of the season off of a feed from Austin Mayer to get the Brahmas back to within one. Adam Pineault’s unassisted score at 5:45 of the final frame gave Allen a two-goal cushion, and Fort Worth was unable to find the back of the net down the stretch despite pulling goaltender Brad Fogal with over two minutes remaining in regulation. Fogal (5-5-1) made his first start since November 23rd in Missouri, stopping 21 of 25 shots on net in a losing effort. Dell (6-3-0) made 25 saves on 27 shots to earn the victory. FORT WORTH, Texas – The Fort Worth Brahmas won their third consecutive game Saturday night as they defeated the Tulsa Oilers 5-1 at the Fort Worth Convention Center.   Tulsa took the early 1-0 lead as David Beauregard scored just 1:17 into the first period. But that would be the only goal Brahmas net minder Kristofer Westblom would allow.   Fort Worth came back and took a 2-1 lead heading into the second period as Tomas Klempa and Sy Nutkevitch both beat Tulsa goaltender Ian Keserich in the opening frame. For Nutkevitch, it was his first game-winning goal of the season.   The Brahmas added three more scores the rest of the way. Erik Spady and Phil Fox notched second-period goals, and Adam Hogg sealed the deal with a third-period score. For Fox, it was his team-leading ninth goal of the season.   Westblom (4-1-0) made 17 saves on 18 Tulsa shots to earn his fourth victory in only five starts. The 6-foot-2, 165-pound goalie has a 1.22 goals against average and a .944 save percentage this season.   Keserich allowed five goals on 30 shots in net for the Oilers, earning his seventh regulation loss of the season.
