Aviators knot series with Whalers

DANBURY, Conn. – Chris Campanale scored the game-winning goal 8:32 into the third period and Jo St. Pierre stopped 44 shots as the Brooklyn Aviators defeated the Danbury Whalers 5-2 to tie their best-of-three series at one game each on Saturday night.

Campanale had three points on the night to pace the A’s offense in the victory.

Devin Guy opened the scoring in game two for the Whalers in the first period, after his wrist shot from the slot beat St. Pierre high over the glove at the 11:27 mark.  Down 1-0, Brooklyn continued to pepper Danbury goalie Peter Vetri with quality chances, however the FHL’s Rookie of the Year stood tall turning aside all 10 shots he faced.

Campanale would tie it for Brooklyn, 1-1, with his breakaway tally 2:56 into the second period.  After a dump in by the Whalers went right onto St. Pierre, Ken Trentowski hit Campanale with a home run pass at the Danbury blue line.  Campanale then broke in on Vetri and lifted a backhand over the netminder’s right pad.  Brooklyn then capitalized on a turnover in the slot as Jason Dolgy roofed a loose puck over the right shoulder of Vetri to give the Aviators the 2-1 lead with 13:23 left in the middle frame.

Alex Goupil, though, tied the contest for Danbury – once again – on a one timer from the right wing circle with just 1:02 left in the second to set up another dramatic period.

Late in the third period, and on the power play, Jesse Felten would give the A’s an extra boost with his blast from the left wing circle that got past the left arm of Vetri putting Brooklyn up 4-2.  Mike Thomson added the icing on the cake, as his late tally with 2:23 left in the game put the A’s up for good 5-2.

Vetri suffers his first loss despite putting aside 35 shots in the contest.

These two teams will face off tomorrow evening in the deciding game three at 5:05 PM at the Danbury Ice Arena.

The winner will move on to the FHL’s Semi-Final round starting next week.

Danbury clips Aviators’ wings in OT, 5-4

BROOKLYN, NY – The Danbury Whalers defeated the Brooklyn Aviators 5-4 in overtime to take game one of this best of three series on Friday night in playoff action at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.

rebound goal in front to end arguably one of the more exciting games this season.

Danbury jumped out to a 3-0 edge after the first period of play with two goals coming just 21-seconds apart within the final minute.  Martin Moucha opened the scoring for the Whalers with his first tally of the post season at the 7:18 mark after wristing the puck under the blocker of A’s netminder Jo St. Pierre.  Sanford then put Danbury up 2-0 with 25-seconds left in the frame, which was then followed up with Nick Deschenes’ first tally of the playoffs with four seconds left in the period.

Jesse Felten scored the only goal in the second period for either squad, as his power play marker beat Danbury’s goalie Peter Vetri to pull the A’s within one at 3-1.  The Aviators had plenty of chances to tie the game, with none bigger halfway through the frame when Brooklyn’s defenseman Henry Coxe was awarded a penalty shot.  Coxe skated in alone on Vetri, and tried to slip the puck through the five hole of the netminder however Vetri was too quick and closed the door on Coxe.

Brooklyn scored the third period’s next three goals to take a 4-3 lead over the Whalers with tallies coming from Mike Thomson, Chris Campanale and Casey Mignone.  Mignone’s tally at the 11:35 mark and a great penalty kill had the A’s buzzing into the final seconds of the game thinking game one was wrapped up.  However, Alex Goupil had other ideas as he extended the game with his goal coming with just 3-seconds left in the contest.

Vetri picks up the win stopping 48 shots, while St. Pierre is charged with the loss despite make 39 saves.

Brooklyn and Danbury will meet in game two of this best of three series tomorrow tonight at the Danbury Ice Arena.  Puck drop is scheduled for 7:35 PM, and can be watched live via the Whalers broadcast network, powered by LiveSportsVideo.com.

Game three, if necessary, will be in Danbury as well with a 5:05 PM start time on Sunday.

Aviators thrash New Jersey, 9-3

BROOKLYN, NY – The Brooklyn Aviators picked up their second win in as many nights after defeating the New Jersey Outlaws 9-3 on Saturday night in Federal Hockey League action at the Aviator Sports and Events Center.

Nick Petriello and Chris Campanale each recorded a hat-trick, while seven different Aviators nabbed multiple points in the victory over New Jersey.
It took 17-seconds into the first period for Kevin Cooper to light the lamp for the Outlaws, however the Aviators did not let that early goal get to them as they took a 4-2 lead into the first intermission.  Campanale and Andrew Owsiak both tallied for Brooklyn after the Cooper goal to give the Aviators a 2-1 edge halfway through the period.  Cooper, who was named to the All FHL First-Team, then tied it late in the frame with his second of the period coming on a breakaway.   The Aviators though capitalized on the power play with two markers coming on the man-advantage from Petriello and Jason Dolgy.
Petriello tallied his second of the night, on the power play again, just 2:22 into the second period to give the Aviators a 5-2 lead.  Campanale also scored his second of the night at the 8:02 mark to put Brooklyn up over New Jersey 6-2.  Anthony Battaglia’s one timer got past the glove of A’s netminder Mike DiLorenzo to cut the Outlaws deficit in half to 6-3, however it was the Aviators skating into the second intermission up three on the Outlaws.
Up 6-3 skating into the third period, the Aviators did not let off the gas pedal and added three more markers from Steve Koich, Petreillo, and Campanale – completing both their hat-tricks – to ice the 9-3 victory over the Outlaws.
Outlaws’ netminder Adam Dekker took the loss after surrendering four goals on 14 shots in 17:29 of action, while DiLorenzo earns his fourth win of the year after making 32 saves.
Brooklyn closes out the 2011-12 regular season Sunday afternoon when they take on the New Jersey Outlaws at 4:35 p.m. at the Capital One Ice Vault Arena.

Mike Thomson led the way for the Aviators offensively with three goals and an assist, while goaltender Jo St. Pierre stopped 31 shots in the victory for Brooklyn.

Brooklyn opened up the scoring in the first period after Nick Petriello found the back of the net on the power play at the 5:13 mark.  A loose puck at the base of the right wing circle was picked up by Andrew Scampoli, who then hit Petriello with a pass in the slot.  While falling, Petriello slid the puck under Whalers netminder Peter Vetri for his eighth marker of the season.  The Aviators doubled their lead, 2-0, 2:24 later as Steve Koich snapped one past Vetri for his seventh tally of the season on a beautiful individual effort along the left wing.

Thomson completed the hat trick in the third period, also on the power play, with his breakaway tally at the 1:40 mark, while defenseman Brian Marks scored his first of the year 2:18 later to ice it for Brooklyn.

Vetri gets the loss for Danbury after only playing two periods and stopping 21 of 26 shots before giving away to back up Matt Trusz.
