It was a tough weekend for the Owen Sound Attack, as they dropped their second game of the Thanksgiving Weekend Saturday night, getting shutout 4-0 by the visiting Mississauga Steelheads.
For the second straight game, Owen Sound found themselves in tough against a veteran laden Eastern Conference team. After a feisty game on the Friday night against the Hamilton Bulldogs, the Attack looked gassed trying to keep up with a fast and aggressive Steelheads team.
Owen Sound struggled to create offence, as they were constantly turned back by the visitors, and always forced to make plays under pressure. Backup goalie Corbin Votary stood tall throughout the first period, in his first game of the 2022-23 season, as he turned aside all 14 shots. It looked as though the Steelheads may have snuck one past the south-paw goalie, but the officials deemed goaltender interference, waving the goal off.
The script remained much the same into the second period, as the Steelheads kept up the pressure, firing 22 shots on goal, while allowing only six. The ice-breaker came just over seven minutes into the period, when a puck slid into the slot, and Mississauga rookie Parker Von Richter blasted a shot off the post and in, for his first career OHL goal, and giving the visitors the lead. Owen Sound found themselves in a 2-0 hole just over five minutes later, as Chas Sharpe blasted a one-timer past Votary on a Steelheads 5-on-3 power play.
The Attack were unable to generate any true offence, mustering only 14 shots on goal throughout the coarse of the game, as the veteran Steelheads maintained their aggressive play all game. It was Zakary Lavoie who would seal the game, as his rush chance squeaked through Votary, making it a 3-0 game, before Mason Zebeski claimed his first goal with an empty netter.
The Attack will enjoy the remainder of the holiday weekend to rest and reset, as they prepare for a three game week, kicking things off Wednesday night in Sarnia. A return home, comes next Saturday as the Attack will welcome the defending Western Conference Champion Windsor Spitfires to the Bayshore, for the first time this season.
