It’s that time of year again. The ice is fresh, the lines are perfectly straight and nary a smudge off the edges.
The National Hockey League is back tonight with four games.
The Ottawa Senators are in Toronto to face the Maple Leafs and their lineup of stars paid through VISA and MasterCard accounts. This year is a win or break up season for the Leafs. The window is not closing, but you cannot spend this kind of cash and not win a Cup. Mike Babcock will be on the hot seat all season and with a coach in-waiting with the Marlies, Sheldon Keefe, there is little room for error.
In St Louis, the Blues will raise their Stanley Cup banner and host the previous Cup champs, the Washington Capitals. Not much has changed for the Blues, but you can bet they are disinterested in starting this season like last, only to need to rally in the final months.
Connor McDavid will test his knee i the Oilers home opener versus the Vancouver Canucks. For both clubs, it is secondary scoring that is needed. Consistent goaltending will help, but the Canucks and Oilers need someone other than the first line to kick in a few goals.
The Golden Knights welcome the San Jose Sharks to Las Vegas in the final game of the evening. The Sharks almost got past the Blues in the playoffs, but we all know how much value to put in almost. The Knights were stung by the Sharks in the post season and blamed the officials. Again, you cannot give up four goals on a single power play and expect to win a game.
Doris Kearfs Goodwin always lamented the Boston Red Sox losing seasons and wrote Wait til Next Year, not long after, the Sox have been on a tear.
Thirty-one teams said wait til next year in the NHL in June.
It’s next year boys.
