Anderson leads Sens past Stars in 5-2 win

With the Boston Bruins heating up and winning on Wednesday night, the Ottawa Senators are feeling the heat on the backs of their necks.

Wednesday had the Sens in Dallas to face the Stars and they got a much needed two point-win, 5-2.

Craig Anderson made 35 saves for the win; he now has 146 victories as a Senator.

“It’s a credit to the guys in front for all these years of hard work and dedication, and just a byproduct of guys playing hard in front of me,” Anderson said.

Ottawa leads the Bruins in the standings for second place in the Atlantic Division by four points.

“We’re just taking it one game at a time. We’ll let you guys worry about stats and streaks and all that fun stuff that you can talk about,” Anderson said. “But for us in the room, we’re focused on one game at a time, one period at a time. To break it down even more, for me it’s one shot at a time. We’re showing that it’s fun to win.”

Cody Ceci, Viktor Stalberg and Fredrik Claesson struck for one goal each and two points each on the night as the Sens improved 37-22-6.

Chris Wideman and Jean-Gabriel Pageau also scored for Ottawa.

“I think they stick to defense. We bend, but we don’t break. Sometimes we get hemmed in, but we’ve still got everybody in front of the net blocking shots, sacrificing ourselves. Teams have a tough time scoring against us,” Stalberg said of his new teammates.

Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza scored for Dallas in the loss.

Kari Lehtonen got the start for the Stars but was pulled after he yielded three goals on 18 shots; he was relieved by Antti Niemi.

“We probably would have wanted a couple more saves,” Stars head coach Lindy Ruff said. “Tried to change momentum, tried to get it going the right way. I think that’s kind of the history: If a couple go in, a couple bad you want back, a few more go in. Just made the switch to try to get it going in the other direction.”
