Fort Wayne, Indiana – The Allen Americans, ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, dropped their third straight game, and second in a row on the Indiana road trip falling to the Fort Wayne Komets, 5-3 on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd.
The Americans scored the first two goals of the hockey game. Casey Pierro-Zabotel opened the scoring in the first period netting his 11th of the season from Alex Guptill and Olivier Archambault, to put the Americans up 1-0 at the 5:24 mark. Allen held a slight advantage in shots on goal after the first frame 13 to 12.
Olivier Archambault extended the Americans lead to 2-0, firing home his 13th of the season from Alex Guptill and Casey Pierro-Zabotel at 3:24 of the second frame. Fort Wayne would answer quickly, as Marc-Olivier Roy found the back of the net on the power play at the 5:34 mark to cut the lead in half. The score would remain that way for the remainder of the period, as Stephon Williams stopped 16 of 17 Fort Wayne shots to keep the Americans on top 2-1 after two periods of play.
Fort Wayne tied the score early in the final period on Shawn Szydlowski’s 21st of the season. The Komets would go on to score four unanswered goals on their way to a 5-3 win over the Americans. Three of those third period goals came in just over three minutes of work, as the Komets extended the Americans losing streak to three games.
“We got off to a good start tonight and kept it going through early in the second period,” said Americans forward Bryan Moore. “Unfortunately, our mistakes hurt us again and a bad stretch in the third period cost us the game.”
The American close-out the Indiana road trip tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 pm CST against the Komets. Allen returns home for three games next week beginning on Wednesday night against Rapid City.
