ALLEN, TX – The Allen Americans defeated the Wichita Thunder on Friday night at Allen Event Center by a score of 5-3 despite being outshot 40 to 26 for the game.
The Americans got goals from Travis Brown (3rd), Derek Mathers (7th) and Joel Chouinard (9th) over the first two periods to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Joel Chouinard’s goal came six seconds into the second frame on the power play on a beautiful two-on-one rush setup by David Makowski.
The Thunder would get going early in the third period. First Louick Marcotte would fire home his 13th from Vincent Dunn and Darryl Lloyd to cut the lead to 3-1. Then at the 8:04 mark, Brandon Carlson ripped home his third of the year from way outside to cut the Allen lead to one. Allen would respond a little over five minutes later when Wade Macleod tipped home a Mike Gunn shot for his second goal of the season to make it 4-2 Americans.
Greger Hanson would add a fifth goal when the Allen forward won a race to the front of the net and slid a backhand through the five-hole for his 33rd of the season to give the Americans a 5-2 lead. Wichita added one late to cut it to 5-3. That would be the final score as the Americans won their 40th game of the season.
“We didn’t play our best but got the win,” Americans Co-Captain Gary Steffes said. “It was disappointing that we let them back in the game in the third period. “Every point in critical right now for us. We needed the win.”
The same two clubs are right back at it Saturday night at Allen Event Center at 7:05 p.m. Central Time.
